Yup, the Guinness World Record is officially awarded to Mozilla’s Firefox team. Awesome. Now I’ve got my personal certificate, I’ve gotta make a shirt to go along with it. Promote the best browser in the world [and get your own certificate too!]

Microsoft’s not Cool?

Posted in Computers, News with tags , , , , , on July 2, 2008 by blakejohnson

Last I checked, Microsoft made Windows XP, which in my mind is still a go-to for all-around computing. I’d even feel safe saying it was a good “anything to anyone” OS. To me, Microsoft is cool enough. Until Vista.

However, I also hadn’t thought about the fact that they really don’t have any ads…anywhere! When that occurred to me, during the reading of this article, I was glad that someone with apparent success (Alex Bogusky) so far was stepping in to help ‘em out a bit. Personally, I like the Windows feeling of complete control you get when operating one of their systems. I’ve read that Apple cleverly hid lots of system settings out of the average user’s way, and agree that it’s a smart idea. However, I feel pretty competent on most machines, and like the layout of a Windows machine. I’ve also been raised most my life on Windows, so my fondness may spring partly from that. Either way, I’m interested to hear/read/see what Bogusky comes up with for the mega-company.

Porn

Yup. Porn. We’ve all seen it, heard it, heard of it, yadda, yadda, yadda. I found an article today while perusing the net and read. It’s an interesting (controversial) topic that I like to read about whenever I stumble upon a related article.

“… If you have that much to hide, if you are living some sort of secret and embarrassing and family-endangering double life, if you are constantly burying images and hiding data or altering your persona to the point of endangering your work, if you cannot let someone, say, cruise through your personal sex-toy box without massive blushing and fainting and humiliation, perhaps you’re living the wrong kind of life. You think?”

Not that I have any opinion about it or anything …

The ending of that quote brings up and interesting point. When something about your personal life embarrasses you, how much is true embarrassment from it being hidden, and how much is actually shame? Of course this is a rhetorical question, and I have no answer, but it got me thinking. If we want to live the life that’s unabashed to share personal truths about ourselves, free from worry or guilt of our personal lives, despite the level of secrecy typically expected of such things in life, then we have to get over the typical feeling of secrecy about those things. I just was thinking that saying to someone, in person, that you like porn is much harder said than done for some people, despite how much they may want to live the carefree, open, honest life. I guess there’s no real point to this post other than to link the article and say I thought it was interesting and well-put, but the quote got me thinking that the blushing and humiliation may be more complicated than first percieved.

Maybe a better way to say it is this: we are socially pushed to think and act in certain ways, so when someone finds a drawer full of sex toys, to use the above stated example, we most likely are blushing because of their potential reactions, caused mostly by the social norms and expectations built up by simply living through every day society. So that was my reaction. Just thinking about why someone might have that sort of embarrassed reaction, thinking it’s not necessarily just their shame or embarrassment of having the sex toys discovered in the first place. Anyway… enjoy the article.

Quick! Close my Windows!

I found this today in my Geeks.com newsletter and had to chuckle. Where is the Geekologie entry poking fun at this little gadget?

Now you can be sneaky... and fast!Just in case you want to super-quickly close a window (you know, like when you’re visiting those site you get that special thrill out of visiting at work), you just tap your foot and it’s gone. Voila!

What I want to know is, what happens when it fails? Or when it doesn’t work so well? Do you jump up and down on the pedal? Do you have to actually use your hand (which is presumably already on the mouse) to minimize a window!?

Now I’m back off to looking at those sites I get excited about visiting at school (yes, school, since I don’t have the luxury of a job or an income).

Moonlit Madness

Well, here’s lovely Chapter 3 in my series in the “Well… What Would You Do?” series. I had to give the overall piece of work a name the other day to submit it to another site, so I decided on that, because I kind of think that’s what the story’s about, in part, just playing with people (characters) and seeing what they’ll do in a situation. It’s a fun journey to throw them on, and fun to explore the parts of my mind I haven’t really let out of the hatch yet ;). Enjoy.

NOTE: I’m also splitting them up now, so you’ll get a brief intro for the story and then just click on the “Read More” link at the bottom of this post and you’ll see the whole thing, just so it doesn’t take up my entire main blog page. Otherwise, keep reading!

Lizzy stood there in the hot dry desert, dumbfounded. Alex was waiting for a sign.

“How did we not notice the sand from the doorway?” Lizzy was walking back to the back door now, curious at how she could have managed to miss the fact that they were in a desert, but still in the same house. “It’s like the whole house just got up and-”
