Growing Up

Well…this past Monday marked my entirely-less-than-dramatic exit from the world of teenhood, and entrance into young adulthood in the social context (because of course I’d know what that’s like). It was an ordinary day, I spent my time in the usual ways, with few exceptions (burger ‘n’ shake @ Vera’s – which was awesome – and beers at Malone’s). That – along with kayaking on Sunday – have been the social excursions of my last three months or so.

Recent events and reminiscing and reflecting on life and the people in (and out of) it, I’ve been fascinated with the role of integrity and the limits or ranges it has in daily life. And the demand it places on people, and the image or attitude it seems to imply, often regardless of its usage. More though, more than anything else, I’m surprised at the difficulty to maintain it to the level I feel the need to, and the trickiness in applying it to everyday life when convention and practicality demand otherwise.

Look at me all high and mighty. Eh… 20 years old afford some reflection. As does any birthday, really. And any other day, in my mind. Anyway.. I read the following caption and sort of let recent thoughts surface a bit.

I will settle down. Have children. Keep copies of Reader’s Digest in the bathroom. Watch golf. Mow the yard. Remain emotionally distant from our kids. Go to church. Wear a polo shirt tucked into khaki shorts. Write checks at the grocery store. Become a vacant shell of a person who’s only joy is meatloaf dinners. Basically I’m ready to mature as person by quietly dying inside.

Regardless of convention, I’m sticking with Faintheart and Katie Melua for my foreseeable future. On the good side though, I’ve got some hope, according to Milla Jovovich: “Nerdy guys are always the cool ones in the end.”

Found this via Gawker. Awesome. My kind of humor and subject matter, great fun to see the president recognizing and enjoying the humor as well. It’s a good beginning.

sleepytime…

Oh good god I hate snoring. You can’t concentrate, you can’t relax, you can’t let yourself be sleepy, you can’t make yourself sleepy… all my best writing ideas and lines come to me when I’m tired enough to not get up and write them down (dumb, huh), but when there’s snoring going on in the background I can’t focus enough to put anything together in any sort of showcase-able way.

In other news… discovered @mc_lars (check out ‘Download This Song‘), @Annaleen, @Jon_Favreau, and @neilhimself today thru @feliciaday‘s post here. Gotten followed by two new people today…a Bipolar Disorder helpline and a random dude who’s apparently into ‘technical things, all sorts.’ Bipolar technology… just what I need. One question: does it snore? Because that would be perfect.

So I'm a 9

Found this on Facebook today. Apparently I’m a 9. Here’s what it means…

9’s are natural entertainers. They are very caring and generous, giving away their last dollar to help. With their charm they have no problem making friends and nobody is a stranger to them. They have so many different personalities that people around them have a hard time understanding them. They are like chameleons, ever changing and blending in. They have tremendous luck, but also can suffer from extremes in fortune and mood. To be successful they need to build a loving foundation.

Interesting. I laughed when it said ‘no problem making friends,’ but as I read, it made sense, and actually was more accurate. Interesting…food for thought for the night I guess. Not like my mind needs stimulus form this and bittersweet Coldplay at the same time. Ooh, double-teamed by sorrow! Double-sorrow’d. …Watched Season 2 of The Guild today, and half of Season 1 as a recap and to show the roommate. Laughed pretty good at both. Yea.

Thanks [again], @feliciaday for pointing out this cool looking charity, with a video that definitely caters to the current generation better than ones previous. I’m thinkin’ ’bout gettin’ one of the shirts. What d’ya think? Proceeds go to Room To Read “building schools & libraries for children in developing countries around the world. Sounds good to me…

Stupid Packaging

...and my cool wallpaper :P

I needed some new DVDs to clear off some hard drive space this weekend, so I went out and bought some tonight. Take a look at the space between the disc on the very top, and the top of the actual stack.

An Inch and a Half!

I measured it [yea, geeky] and it came out to 1.5 inches. Simplified, that’s room enough for roughly 32 discs, or roughly 150GB of storage missed out on because they stacked 6 foam spacers on top of the DVDs, then wrapped the paper wrapper around the whole thing to hide the empty space.

[foam] *thug* life

Awesome job, Maxell. Real heros, you guys are.

Note: I shouldn’t complain, I have the ability to buy and use DVDs at my leisure. Outside the store where I got them was a street musician who might have been homeless, but was definitely worse off than me. Plus, I got what I wanted to begin with, so it’s not a loss.
